For Candidates

What is an Apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is an opportunity for young people and adult learners to earn while they learn in a real job, gaining valuable experience and accredited qualifications with a real future.

An apprenticeship is made up of a framework of vocational qualifications designed specifically for your workplace.

Completing an apprenticeship is a great way of kick-starting your career, gaining practical skills, industry knowledge and earning a salary in either a new role or your existing job role.

Work-based delivery means not having to get the bus to a training centre or college each week.

The minimum salary is £3.70 per hour; however, many apprentices earn significantly more plus you will be given at least 20 days’ paid holiday per year on top of bank holidays.

Apprenticeships are designed with the help of the employers in the industry, so they offer a structured programme that build skills you need to do a job well.

Apprentices receive training to work towards nationally recognised qualifications. Apprenticeships can take between one and four years to complete depending on the level of apprenticeship, the apprentices’ ability and the industry sector.

Apprenticeships train you in the skills your employers want and give you choices in your career. Adding new skills to your CV, including customer service, communications, team-work, leadership and many more, all support you to progress into long term employment.

For a nominal fee, you will receive an NUS Apprenticeship card allowing you to receive discounts in many retail, food and other services. Favourites include McDonalds, Topshop, ASOS, Office and Amazon.

Universities are charging around £9000 a year. Add in a maintenance loan and you are looking at a debt of £45,000 PLUS before you even start work! An apprenticeship allows you to pursue a career whilst earning a salary.

Anyone living in England, over 16 years old and not in full-time education can apply to be an apprentice. You can also complete an apprenticeship as part of your current job role to help you progress and develop your skills.

Delivered over around 1 year, you will study a framework of qualifications making up the apprenticeship at either an Intermediate, Advanced or Higher level. The apprenticeship is made up of:

  • NVQ (national vocational qualification)
  • Technical Certificate (underpinning theories)
  • Functional Skills in maths, English and with business apprenticeships, ICT
  • ERR (employee rights and responsibilities)

The level of qualification is dictated by the job role you will be applying for rather than your previous qualifications.

Our apprenticeships are work-based, so they are delivered entirely in the workplace. A Runway Assessor would come and visit you in the workplace every 2/3 weeks. Our assessors will assess you in a number of ways – observation, written, verbal, witness testimonies from managers and work evidence.

Apprenticeships last 1 year, after this apprentices decide with their employers whether they would like to continue with the same organisation or whether they think it is time to move on elsewhere.

After finishing, the majority of apprentices (85%) will stay in employment, with two-thirds (64%) staying with the same employer. Employers think that qualified apprentices are 15% more employable than those with other qualifications.

Apprentices must be paid a minimum of the National Apprenticeship Minimum Wage of £3.30 per hour for a minimum of 30hrs per week. We encourage all of our employers to consider living costs in the area and generally they offer a higher rate than this.
