About Us:

In addition to being a registered charity, Bethany is a co-educational, independent boarding and day School for pupils aged 11-18 years. There are 325 pupils in the School, including 110 boarding pupils. The majority of pupils remain in the School until they are eighteen and most proceed to University. There are 90 pupils in the Sixth Form and the A Level pass rate in 2019 was 95%. The 2019 GCSE pass rates was 85% at 9-4 (A*-C) grade.

The Post:

  • To work under the guidance of class teachers in the planning and implementation of work programmes with individuals or groups of pupils or the whole class to promote effective teaching and learning;
  • To provide general support to the class teachers in the management and organisation of the pupil and the classroom;
  • To assist the teachers in creating and maintaining a purposeful, orderly and supportive learning environment;
  • To promote the inclusion of all pupils, ensuring they have equal opportunities to learn and develop;
  • Attending meetings alongside experienced staff outside of School hours to develop skills;
  • To be responsible for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young people within the School.

Supporting the Pupils:

  • To support working relationship with the pupils, acting as role model and setting high expectations;
  • Demonstrating positive behaviours and promoting Fundamental British Values;
  • To support pupils learning in the most effective way;
  • To meet the personal needs of pupils whilst encouraging their independence;
  • To support pupils with special educational needs through the delivery of specific learning programmes as set by the DLS department;
  • To encourage pupils to interact and work co-operatively, ensuring all pupils are engaged in activities.

Supporting the Teachers:

  • To shadow staff (at least initially) during lessons for observational purposes;
  • To work closely with the teachers to assist in the planning, development and delivery of all areas of the curriculum;
  • As required, to prepare the classroom/outside areas for lessons, ensuring that resources and equipment are available and cleared away at the end of the lessons as appropriate;
  • To work on classroom displays following consultation with the teachers;
  • To support with the observation, monitoring and evaluation of pupil responses to learning activities through a range of assessment and monitoring strategies determined by the teachers.

Supporting the School:

  • To comply with and assist as with all School staff with the development of policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety and security, SEN/Inclusion and data protection, reporting all concerns to the appropriate named person;
  • To attend relevant meetings and participate in training opportunities and professional development as required for the duration and completion of the Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard;
  • To provide support for pupils’ emotional and social needs by encouraging and modelling positive behaviour in line with School policy;
  • To accompany teaching staff and pupils on visits, trips, and out of School activities as required within contracted hours and to take responsibility for pupils under the supervision of the teacher,
  • To assist with the general pastoral care of pupils, including helping pupils who are unwell, distressed, or unsettled;
  • To support and assist in the training and development of staff;
  • To adhere to all School policies and procedures, not limited to Safeguarding and Child Protection, Health and Safety, IT policy Staff Code of Conduct and Equality and Diversity.

Supporting the Curriculum:

  • To support and assist in the development of basic Literacy, Numeracy and ICT skills and support the use of these learning activities as directed by the class teachers;
  • To support and help adapt and plan the development of resources necessary to lead learning activities, taking into account pupils’ interests, language, and cultural backgrounds;
  • Undertake broadly similar duties commensurate with the level of the post as required by the Headteacher or a member of the Senior Management Team.

Personal Qualities and Qualifications:

  • Show a willingness to ‘go the extra mile’;
  • 5 GCSE’s or equivalent A* – C 9/4 including Maths & English;
  • Full Driving License and access to transport;
  • Have an enthusiasm to work as a member of a team and also to use your own initiative when leading or planning activities;
  • Be adaptable and confident in one’s own ability;
  • Be able to build meaningful and appropriate relationships;
  • Have a willingness to learn and a desire to contribute to their own continuing professional development.

Terms of Employment

  • Hours are 8.45am until 6pm Monday and 8,45am until 5pm Tuesday to Friday.
  • Term-time Contract (36 weeks per year);
  • Fixed-term contract until from 01 September 2021 to 31 August 2023.

General Salary and Conditions

  • Hours are 8.45am – 5pm Monday to Friday, 36 weeks a year (Term Time Only).
  • Starting salary is £6.56 an hour (above apprenticeship rate of pay) for your first year of apprenticeship, with a salary review in year two.
  • Half a day will be allocated for self and directed study.
  • The post is subject to the completion of a confidential medical questionnaire and the self-certification of medical fitness together with the normal DBS checks.
