Job Purpose

The post holder will support pupils with Special Educational Needs to help them access the whole curriculum and become independent learners. This is a training role and as such the apprentice will work towards fulfilling all aspects of the role by the end of the apprenticeship.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Care and support of key students

  • Monitor the progress of key designated students, intervening, as necessary, by supporting the development of their academic, behavioural  and/or social skills
  • Meet with designated children regularly to track well-being and academic progress
  • Provide 1:1 support as necessary and as specified by SENCo
  • Encourage the pupils to take responsibility for their own behaviour and act independently
  • Support the delivery of small group work
  • Liaise with parents to maintain effective communication between the school and home

Facilitate small group or one to one intervention sessions

  • Assess and monitor the progress of students
  • Follow programmes of intervention aimed at improving, for example, literacy, numeracy and self-esteem
  • Maintain accurate records of attendance and progress
  • Build effective learning relationships

In-class support

  • Work with designated subject area staff to provide in-class support and differentiated materials for pupils with special needs
  • Be prepared to support small groups at the discretion of the SENCo and or class teacher
  • Provide relevant information to contribute to the teacher’s records and reports
  • Actively encourage pupils to participate in learning tasks and activities consistent with their developmental level, physical abilities and medical conditions

Other duties and responsibilities

  • Respond appropriately to conflict situations and incidents of anti-social behaviour in line with school policies and own capabilities
  • Provide praise and encouragement to pupils to recognise and promote positive pupil behaviour in line with school policies
  • Use equipment and materials in a correct, safe manner consistent with legal and school requirements
  • Follow health and safety regulations and guidelines when attending to pupils’ hygiene, health and medical needs and when appropriate escort pupils with physical disabilities including wheelchair users
  • Recognise and respond promptly to signs of health problems in pupils (common illnesses and for those with particular needs)
  • Be able to recognise and refer any safeguarding issues by following school policy
  • Attend and participate in CPD sessions as required by the school
  • Carry out any other reasonable duties as required by the SENCo

  • Give encouragement and feedback using language and vocabulary which the pupil is likely to understand
  • Take responsibility for self-development and continuous learning
  • Be able to build effective learning relationships with students
  • Have an understanding of the range of difficulties and/or disabilities that a pupil might face, or be disposed to learning about these.

NB

Experience in the above aspects is desirable but not essential, as training and support will be provided.
